polluting the river in the name of religion
Every year between the months of April and September, lakhs of devotees and tourists trek up to Yamunotri, which falls in Uttarakhand and is considered sacred by Hindus. But huge quantities of cheap plastic raincoats are dumped in the river by them which is a huge source of environmental pollution.
Domestic and industrial sewage generated within the NCT of Delhi
is the main source of pollution of the river Yamuna during its
passage through the NCT. Despite over ten years of efforts and
expenditure of Rs. 872 crore since 19941 on establishment of
sewage treatment infrastructure for treatment of domestic and
industrial sewage before its release into the river, the quality of
water at the point where the river leaves Delhi has deteriorated
drastically with large amounts of untreated sewage still falling into
the river.

Delhi alone contributes around 3,296 MLD (million liters per day) of sewage by virtue of drains out falling in Yamuna . The low perennial flow in Yamuna and the huge quantity of waste it receives have given it the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted rivers of the country.

The quantum of waste acity generates is in direct propotion to the water consumed.80% of the water of a household is waste .River pollution is directly linked to mindless water planning and management.

Point sources of pollution The point sources of pollution are contributed at a single point in significant amount such as wastewater drain joining a water body. The point source pollution covers two major categories:Domestic pollution & Industrial pollution. Domestic Pollution Sewage is discharged into the river without any treatment from the cities located along the banks of river and its tributaries. This affects aquatic life and depletes oxygen level resulting into bad odours and turbidity. The river water does not remain suitable due to pollution, for uses like drinking, outdoor bathing, propagation of aquatic life, irrigation and industrial purposes.
Industrial Pollution Industrial pollution adissolved oxygen, temperature & pH etc. Some industrial effluents cause toxicity. Large and medium industrial units - 22 in Haryana, 42 in Delhi and 17 in Uttar Pradesh have been identified as directly discharging and polluting the river Yamuna under the Action Plan area. These industries include paper, sugar, chemical, leather, distillery and pharmaceuticals etc. These industries are contemplated to adopt adequate pollution control measures under the existing environment laws to ensure that treated effluent confirming the prescribed standards should only be discharged into the river. ffects water quality

Due to high density population growth, rapid industrialization, today Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi, the capital of India, which dumps about 58% of its waste into the river. Though numerous attempts have been made to clean it, the efforts have proven to be futile. Although the government of India has spent nearly $500 million to clean up the river, the river continues to be polluted
There are three main sources of pollution in the river, namely households and municipal disposal sites, soil erosion resulting from deforestation occurring to make way for agriculture along with resulting chemical wash-off from fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides and run-off from commercial activity and industrial sites.

It is largest reservoir of drinkable, potable water for the cities and states like Delhi, Haryana ,Uttar Pradesh
